Bad Wiring

Detron wasn't his name but that is the name most of us knew him by and it befits the electronic rendering I did of him. When I first asked to do his portrait, he flatly refused. As recognition for my work spread, he finally approached me one morning in the courtyard and agreed to sit for me. It was a rare opportunity which I immediately took advantage of. He was a beautiful young man with serious psychological problems. He rarely spoke. He rarely smiled. His medications often left him unreachable and drooling profusely. I still recall how the morning sun glistened off his skin. One thing I found most interesting about Detron was the inner rim of his eyes. They were not pale, nor brown but intensely black. As with all of the portraits created for the 5150 series, it was completed in approximately three days. When I unveiled Bad Wiring, Detron came by to view the outcome. A beaming smile broke across his face. "That's me!" is all he had to say. He had a smile to light up the world. I had given him a voice. His demeanor changed as though someone had brought out something he was trying to say or overcome for years. The theraputic outcome of doing his psychological portrait was instantly obvious. I don't know what happened to Detron. He was released soon thereafter even though I will never understand the reasoning behind his release. I can only wish him well in his quest for balance and happiness in his life.
