Voices

(Schizophrenia)

By the time "Voices" came into being, my work was being highly revered and in some cases feared. The doctors weren't quite sure what to do with this guy running around with a sketch pad and doing psychological portraits of the residents. "Voices" is in truth a combination work that melds one of the male nurses with a female patient who arrived two days prior to my release. The CNA had been bribing me with cigarettes in an effort to get me to draw his portrait. You would be surprised at the value of a pack of cigarettes in such an environment. I finally relented and pimped myself out. However, he rarely had any time to sit for me so the work was based upon observances of him during his work shift. Due to these restrictions the it ended up looking like a mug shot of one of America's Most Wanted. I'd basically given up on the work when "she" arrived. I never did learn her name yet she was without a doubt someone I would have loved to portray. She was extraordinarily intelligent and would wander throughout the courtyard, arguing with the Heavens. I was mezmerized and would watch and llisten for hours. I couldn't hear both sides of the debate but it was fascinating. That is when I knew what to do with the mug shot. I introduced her psychological disorder (for lack of a better term) into the work in an effort to give her a visual voice. "Voices" was finished after my release so neither the CNA nor the patient ever had the opportunity to view the finished portraiture of their combined physical and emotional union.
